Acupuncture for perimenopause and menopause
The menopause is when your periods stop for good, usually between the ages of 45 and 55. It’s often the years leading up to it, the perimenopause, when symptoms are hardest.
Hot flushes and night sweats, broken sleep, anxiety and low mood, brain fog, joint aches, and periods that become unpredictable: many women tell me they simply don’t feel like themselves.
Acupuncture alongside HRT
Some women come to me because they can’t take HRT or would prefer not to. Others are taking HRT and want extra support for the symptoms that remain. Either way, acupuncture can sit alongside the advice of your GP or menopause specialist.
How I work
Menopause affects everyone differently, so treatment starts with time to talk about everything that has changed for you, from your sleep and mood to your energy and cycle. I focus on the symptoms that are troubling you most, and we review how you’re getting on as treatment goes on. Most women start with weekly sessions, spacing them out as things settle.
I also see women going through early menopause, or menopause brought on by surgery or medical treatment.
Questions women often ask
Do my periods need to have stopped?
No. Many of the women I see are in the perimenopause, when periods are still coming but have become irregular. You don’t need a diagnosis or a blood test to come and see me.
Can I have acupuncture if I’m taking HRT?
Yes. Please tell me what you’re taking, and any changes your doctor makes, so that I can take them into account.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on how long you’ve had symptoms. Most women start with six to ten weekly sessions. After that, some carry on every four to six weeks.
