Acupuncture for fertility and IVF
Months of tracking cycles, tests and waiting, or the intensity of an IVF cycle with its injections, scans and appointments, can be exhausting, both physically and emotionally.
I have provided acupuncture for women going through IVF and other assisted conception for many years and from 2009 to 2011 I worked on the NHS IVF unit at Hammersmith Hospital. I know how fertility clinics work, the language they use, and how demanding treatment can be.
Who I see
- Women trying to conceive naturally, including those with irregular cycles, PCOS or endometriosis
- Women preparing for IVF, ICSI, IUI or frozen embryo transfer
- Women choosing to become parents on their own, through donor conception
- Women who have been through miscarriage or unsuccessful IVF cycles
Some women come to me while trying to conceive naturally, some in the months before starting IVF, and others once a treatment cycle has begun. Many also want help with things that go alongside it, such as an irregular or painful cycle, poor sleep, or the stress of treatment.
How I work
I’ll start by asking about your history, your cycle and any treatment you’re having or planning, and I’ll plan sessions around your clinic’s timetable. Egg collection and embryo transfer dates are often confirmed at short notice, so I keep space to see you around these important days. I work alongside your fertility clinic and am happy to fit around its plan.
Questions women often ask
When should I start acupuncture if I’m having IVF?
There’s no fixed rule. Some women start in the months before their cycle begins, and others once treatment is under way. Whenever you start, I’ll plan sessions around your clinic’s dates.
How often will I come?
Usually once a week. Around egg collection and embryo transfer we may add a session, if that suits you and your clinic’s timings.
Should I tell my fertility clinic I’m having acupuncture?
Yes, it’s a good idea. Please also tell me about any medication you’re taking or about to start, so that I can plan treatment around it.
Can I come if I’m trying to conceive without IVF?
Yes. Many of the women I see are trying naturally. We’ll look at your cycle month by month, and I’ll ask about things like the length of your cycle, your periods and your sleep.
“I had acupuncture with Sharminee alongside fertility treatment. She was so brilliant during this time, offering a calming space, and was so responsive and attentive, guiding me through the acupuncture process each session.”
“It was a peaceful time to relax and readjust, away from the very clinical hospital appointments and injections.”
